Our History
1994
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. is formed in response to demands from local architects and developers seeking high-quality commercial tenant engineering with superior customer service.
1942
Metropolitan Engineering’s history begins with the formation of General Engineering, establishing the company’s credibility and expertise.
1987
Jerry O’Brien and partners from General Engineering creates Shapiro-O’Brien and Associates.
1990
Shapiro-O’Brien and Associates enjoys a highly acclaimed reputation for engineering commercial office buildings throughout Metropolitan Washington, DC, and much of Crystal City, Virginia.
2003
The two organizations merge to fulfill the mission of better serving clients and optimizing operations. Metropolitan Engineering Inc. continues to thrive on these synergies that provide great opportunities for the company, employees, and clients.
2013
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. becomes the leading consulting engineering group in innovations, new building systems technology and sustainable MEP engineering.
2015
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. is recognized by leading VRF manufacturers as the single largest VRF specifying consulting engineering group in the United States of America.
2016
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. enters into the general contracting and sub-contracting market, offering design-build and design-assist delivery methods.
2018
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. integrates MEP design with the off-site manufacturing delivery method, bringing together design and manufacturing to develop a fully-integrated panelized system solution.
2020
Metropolitan Engineering Inc. establishes itself as the design-build leader in applying advanced technologies to both the design and construction processes, developing each built project through 3D modeling and producing precise field connection points during design which are efficiently mapped in the field during construction, virtually eliminating most uncertainties in cost and constructability.

Careers
Assistant project manager
- Working with PM team on coordinating information to and from clients
(architects, contractors, project managers, developers, etc.), creating and
maintaining project and production schedules (proposals, invoicing, and
billing). - Working with Design team on distributing received information and
sending out finalized submissions to clients. - Working with Construction Administration team on distribution of incoming
RFIs and Submittals as well as sending out responses.
Project administrator
- Working with PM team on coordinating information to and from clients
(architects, contractors, project managers, developers, etc.), distributing
project information and production schedules, and creating proposals and
billing documents. - Working with Construction Administration team on distribution of incoming
RFIs and Submittals as well as sending out responses while using BIM
360, Excel to track processes.
Requirements
Candidates for these positions shall have 0 - 3 years of experience and a
B.S. or B.A. degree preferably in Engineering, Architecture, Construction or
related fields:
Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Engineering
